Cultural Day - November 2016

Our last annual Cultural Day was held on Sunday 27 November, 2016. Students were able to choose from several practical workshops to create their own half-day or one-day programme. Options included crafts, singing, drama, calligraphy and others. As always, activities varied from educational to entertaining, from serious to hilarious. The day ran from 9:30 to 16:30, including a fresh and delicious buffet lunch. These days are extremely popular and sometimes over-subscribed, so do watch the School calendar for a similar inspirational day in 2017!

Discantus Choir: concert in Brasschaat

A marvellous concert by Discantvs, the London School choir, was a highlight of last year's programme. Late the night before, Discantus bus arrived from London at the School House in Antwerp, where the choir would stay for the night. On Saturday they continued their journey to Amsterdam to give a concert there, then that same evening returned to Antwerp. Next morning they sang during High Mass, and the warm applause of the appreciative audience appreciative audience gave a foretaste of what was to come in the afternoon.

in the words of Ingrid Nieuwlandt, one of the organisers: A strong wind made clear that autumn had arrived. Approaching the lovely square and solemn church of Brasschaat, you could see something was about to take place. Inside the church itself, the fine balance between old and new was striking: a spacious welcoming entrance hall allows time to leave worldly things behind and enter in the holy silence, a real blessing. Soon the church was filled, a wonderful mixture of the local public and members of the School of Philosophy, along with their friends and family. Then suddenly it happened. Angelic sounds seemed to float down from heaven. When the choir appeared and stood in its grandeur in front of the audience, for me it was hard to believe these were the same people I saw the same morning, struggling out of bed and dealing with outfits and breakfast and all those daily things. Now, here was a choir, a high level choir, delivering the most wonderful music! My heart was lifted and several times tears of pure bliss welled up. Time did not exist. The experience was one of total enjoyment, as if protected under a glass dome. It was the most excellent thing to do on that autumn Sunday afternoon. Thank you Discantus, for all the hours of rehearsal, all the years of practice and perseverance!
